Why Does My Trampoline Squeak? (And How to Fix It)

If you were to make a list of the most annoying sounds, you wouldn’t have to get far before mentioning a trampoline squeak.

It’s repetitive and disrupts the peace and harmony of your backyard. And nobody wants that.

Today, we’re going to use our decades of trampoline experience to explain why your trampoline is squeaking. More importantly, we’re going to give you actionable solutions for how to stop it.

3 Reasons Why Trampolines Squeak

When your trampoline produces that unpleasant squeaking noise, it typically stems from one of three underlying causes: Worn-out trampoline parts, insufficient lubrication of the springs or loose/missing components.

Here’s more details on each of those issues and how to fix them:

1. Worn-Out or Damaged Trampolines Parts

The first thing you must check to get to the root of the squeaking noise is worn-out parts.

Over time, trampoline parts, such as springs or frame components, can wear out or become damaged due to weather exposure or heavy use.

When these parts deteriorate, they may start producing squeaking noises as they rub against each other or the trampoline's structure.

How to fix it: Order trampoline replacement parts. Most of the time, this will mean replacing the trampoline springs (which need to be done every 2-5 years, depending on the model.)

You can usually find replacement springs from your brand’s website or various online retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Replacement trampoline springs can cost as little as $10 or over $100 depending on the brand, size and type of springs you buy.

Tip: Make sure to check your trampoline’s warranty. There’s a chance your replacement springs could be covered if you meet the criteria during your warranty period.

2. Insufficient Lubrication

Proper lubrication of your trampoline springs is essential to minimize friction between moving parts of a trampoline, like the springs or hinges.

When lubrication becomes inadequate or dries up, the increased friction can lead to squeaking sounds. This often occurs when a trampoline hasn’t been well-maintained.

The best lubricant for trampoline springs will be WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant

How to fix it: Spray or apply the lubricant evenly on each spring. Use a clean rag to spread the lubricant across the entire surface. Have your kids jump on the trampoline to see if the squeaking noise has stopped.

Lubricating your trampoline springs can be a step you take before ordering replacement parts. However, if you have rusty trampoline springs that are stretching, lubrication may not stop the squeaking noise.

Rusty trampoline springs also pose a significant safety hazard for your children!

3. Loose or Missing Trampoline Components

A final explanation for why your trampoline is squeaking could be from loose or missing components. Loose nuts, bolts, or other fasteners can create unnecessary movement in the trampoline's frame or parts.

This movement can lead to squeaks, and if components are entirely missing, it exacerbates the issue.

How to fix it: Regularly inspect and tighten all connections of the trampoline. We recommend doing a monthly maintenance check for your trampoline. Checking for loose or missing components is the least intrusive solution to fixing a squeaking trampoline.

How Trampoline Squeaking Can Signal a Failing Trampoline

A squeaky trampoline is not just annoying. It can actually be a sign that your trampoline might be deteriorating.

If your trampoline is squeaking, investigate it right away. The issues we discussed in the last section – worn-out parts, non-lubricated springs, loose components – are safety hazards.

Your kids can suffer a trampoline injury if they jump on a degrading trampoline for too long. Don’t wait: Be actionable if your trampoline starts squeaking. There could be more dire consequences than the aggravating noise.

Expert Tips for Preventing Trampoline Squeaks

Now that you know how to stop trampoline squeaking, there are steps you can take to help prevent it from happening in the first place. The following are tips to help keep your trampoline from squeaking and ensure a quieter bouncing experience:

  • Regular Maintenance: Perform monthly inspections and check for wear, damaged parts, and loose components.
  • Tighten Nuts and Bolts: Ensure that all nuts and bolts are securely fastened.
  • Keep it Clean: Regularly clean your trampoline to remove debris that can cause friction and noise during use.
  • Rust Prevention: Check for rust on metal parts and remove it if you find any. Consider applying a rust-resistant coating to prevent further issues.
  • Lubrication: Apply a suitable lubricant to the springs and moving parts like hinges and joints at least once a year.
  • Use Trampoline Cover: Consider investing in a trampoline cover to protect your equipment from the elements.

  • Follow Manufacturer Recommendations: Always adhere to the manufacturer's care instructions for your specific trampoline model. They may provide guidance on maintenance and lubrication specific to your trampoline.
  • Look Into a Springless Trampoline: If you’re annoyed with trampoline squeaks, a springless trampoline could be worth looking into as an alternative.

FAQ: Trampoline Squeaking

Let’s wrap up and cover five commonly asked questions about trampoline squeaks:

1. How Do I Stop My Trampoline From Squeaking?

There are three main ways to stop your trampoline from squeaking: Fix loose or missing trampoline components, lubricate your trampoline springs or replace the springs altogether.

2. Why Does My New Trampoline Squeak?

A brand-new trampoline might squeak due to factors like insufficient lubrication, manufacturing residue, or the settling of components. These issues can lead to increased friction and noise when the trampoline is in use.

3. Can You Use WD40 on a Trampoline?

Yes, you can use WD-40 on a trampoline to lubricate its springs and other metal parts. WD-40 is often used to reduce friction and prevent squeaking in trampolines. You can also use WD-40 Rust Remover to help remove rust.

However, it's essential to apply it sparingly and avoid getting it on the jumping mat or other non-metallic components to prevent slipperiness or damage.

4. How Do You Lubricate Trampoline Springs?

Apply the lubricant evenly to each spring and then use a clean rag to distribute it over the entire surface. Trampoline springs should be lubricated at least once a year.

5. What Is the Quietest Trampoline?

A Springfree Trampoline is the quietest trampoline due to its use of flexible composite rods to provide the bounce instead of metal trampoline springs.

The Springfree Trampoline bounce is soft, easy on the joints and provides roughly the equivalent height of a spring-based bounce.

Is a Springless Trampoline Your Answer to a Quieter Bounce?

Trampoline squeaking is not only unpleasing to the ear, but it might also signal the necessity for a replacement trampoline.

You can certainly take steps to fix the squeaking noise (as we laid out in this article), but if you’re squeaking trampoline is showing signs of age, you may be better served to invest in a new trampoline.

Springless trampolines are typically safer, higher-quality and longer-lasting than spring trampolines. And they don’t squeak!

As a whole, though, springless trampolines can be a bit pricier than traditional spring trampolines.
