It is every parent’s worst nightmare – the site of your child laying face down in a swimming pool. Each year families are struck with such tragedy and as one father found out at a Brisbane public swimming pool, tragedy can happen in a blink of an eye.
The 5-year-old girl had just finished swimming lessons with her father when she slipped out of the change rooms unnoticed. Her father frantically searched for her when moments later she was found at the bottom of the training pool. She is now fighting for her life at the Maters Children Hospital.
This is timely reminder to all as we lead into the summer months. Drowning is the greatest cause of accidental death in children under five in Australia.
Drowning prevention and awareness advocate Andrew Plint told The Courier Mail that constant supervision around water is vital. Life Guards are not babysitters. Simply put he said, “You can not relax with kids around water, it can happen so quickly.”
