Hurricane Safety Tips for Your Trampoline

As Hurricane Irene approaches the east coast in the US and Canada, Springfree Trampoline wants you and your family to keep safe. In a storm, wind can pick up the trampoline mat and carry it away, posing a danger to the safety of families.

We definitely don’t want THIS to happen to your trampoline:

First and foremost, assess the situation. If you anticipate SEVERE and EXTREME weather, the trampoline should be moved to a sheltered location or disassembled.

For inclement weather, the absolute best guard for your Springfree Trampoline is our Ground Anchor. The anchor is designed specifically for the Springfree Trampoline and will keep it safely and securely on the ground. This product has been tested against competing products in various conditions to achieve the highest pull out force.

Here are some additional tips to keep your Springfree safe in inclement weather:

  • Collapse the FlexiNet. Remove the white C-clips and pull the net rod out of the socket. This takes less than 10 minutes to do and will prevent your net rods from catching high wind.
  • Secure the frame. Although the Ground Anchor is the best accessory for securing your trampoline frame, you can use sandbags or a generic anchor kit from a hardware store to ensure your trampoline will stay put in a hurricane.

Remember: any trampoline that is not properly anchored has the potential to move and become airborne during severe weather, potentially causing injury and/or damage. Stay safe by taking preventative measures.

Hear It. See It. Speak It: Weight of Backpacks

Undefined

If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter, by now you must know how much we care about product safety. In a world where even seemingly harmless everyday items can threaten children, we exist to provide your family with a safe trampoline alternative, Springfree Trampoline.

Backpacks are a fixture on children’s backs from the first day of kindergarten until graduation day. Here’s the startling truth: close to 28,000 people were treated in hospitals for backpack-related injuries like strains, sprains, dislocations and fractures in 2010, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

A recent Australian study revealed the following statistics:

  • 79% of children say their backpack feels heavy
  • 66% of children report fatigue caused by weight of their backpack
  • 46% of children report back pain caused by weight of their backpack

Springfree parents were very vocal on this topic. An overwhelming majority expressed concern about the weight of their children’s backpacks. Some of you gave alarming testimonials:

“I routinely weigh my petite 11 year old’s back pack. She is 75 lbs and soaking wet, her backpack averages about 25 pounds. I hate it!” – Kelly

“[Last year, my son] was a 6th grader, barely 68 lbs and with his backpack packed, trumpet in hand for band and lunchbox he stepped on the scale and weighed in at 102 lbs! I was LIVID! A 34 lb gain in STUFF for school.” – Joy

As a rule of thumb, a child should not carry more than 10-15% of his or her body weight.

A number of Springfree parents also identified textbooks as the main cause of heavy backpacks. Some tips to lighten the textbook load include: bringing textbooks home only when necessary, photocopying relevant pages or keeping a second set of textbooks at home.

When choosing backpacks, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommend that you pay attention to the following features:

  • Shoulder straps should be wide and padded. Opt for double shoulder straps over single shoulder straps to evenly distribute backpack weight.
  • Padded back and waist straps provide extra support and comfort.
  • Lightweight backpacks made of canvas (instead of leather) reduce the overall weight.
  • Rolling backpacks with wheels are also great options.

Backpacks don’t have to be a pain in the back. Be proactive and have a conversation with your child today about backpack safety.

What other tips do you have to lighten the weight of your children’s backpacks?

Hear It. See It. Speak It: Social Media Babies

Undefined

Social media has transformed the way parents create memories with their kids. Family photo albums are replaced with virtual albums on Facebook and home videos are uploaded on YouTube for the world to see (Charlie Bit My Finger is a classic example). Inevitably, the phenomenon of “social media babies” is on the rise. The statistics are very revealing. A survey of 2,200 mothers from around the world with children under the age of two found the following:

  • 23% of mothers have posted sonograms of their babies online
  • 7% of parents have created an email address for their babies
  • 70% of mothers have posted images of their babies to share with friends and family

The same study revealed that a child develops an online presence at an average age of 6 months – before they can even walk or talk! By the time they turn two, over 80 per cent of children already have a digital footprint.

Many of you feel very strongly about this topic. The general consensus is that children younger than 13 (or 16, in some cases) should not be on social media channels. Our community members had a number of good reasons:

If the [child] violates the terms of service, I won’t support or engage.” – Mike

[Children] need to develop their social skills in the real world first.” – Carolina

It is too easy for bullying to start online, hidden behind the 'security' of a computer, fake profiles and faceless harassment can damage our children's perceptions of the world and themselves.” – Elsie

Despite parental concerns, it seems social media is encouraging parents to share more information about their children as early as possible. Earlier this month, Facebook announced that expectant parents can add their unborn babies as a family member on their profiles with a photo, name and due date. Announcing a pregnancy via Facebook just might become the newest trend for parents of the iGeneration. Allowing children to have a social media presence is a personal decision made by parents. Bobi, a Springfree community member, articulates the important role that parents play when it comes to raising “social media babies”:

It depends on the child, the way it will be used, and how involved the parents will be in educating their children and monitoring their online activity… [My husband and I] also have the knowledge and tools to monitor all online activity - and we do so! I think it is a decision that parents need to educate themselves on, and decide what is right for their family.”

We couldn’t have said it better, Bobi! What “rules” do you enforce at home regarding social media? How did you decide what was right for your family?
