Men are the new women in the underwear stakes!

Watch out ladies, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, Men are the New Women… Confused? It all started with the Mirdle also known as the Men’s Girdle.

mirdle_420-420x0

Designed to smooth and slenderize the waistline, the Mirdle is the latest craze hitting Australian department stores and men love the shape they can achieve with the Mirdle, which is reflected in the under garment sales.

This new trend doesn’t really surprise me! With the “Metro Man” now the norm in modern society – isn’t this just an extension of their needs?

The Metro Man is defined by their security in their sexuality, sensitivity, intuition and penchant for grooming. Their interest in style and fashion (and figure flattering underwear) doesn’t make them feel any less masculine or any less heterosexual.

We have a variety of different type of personalities in the Australian Springfree™ Trampoline office so I was interested to see if any of the men here would wear the Mirdle?

Justin Sales Consultant aged 24

“I would wear it! If it took 5 years of your gut who wouldn’t?”

Paul – Spare Parts and Warranty late 30′s

“Yeah I would definitely wear it! What a great idea.

Aaron – Warehouse assistant early 30′s

“No, No, No…. Not this week anyway but things could change.”

Jason – Sales Consultant Sydney Late 20′s

“No – I might if I was bigger”

So there you have it! The Metro Man gets stronger everyday…

What do you think about the Mirdle? Or better yet are you wearing one now?

Biggest Loser Star is on a mission to Jump for Joy!

Erin & Emma meet Alison Braun

Erin & Emma meet Alison Braun

You need to get out of your comfort zone and jump for joy” says the inspirational Alison Braun.

The once self confessed overweight mother stole the hearts of the Australian nation in the 2008 Biggest Loser competition.

I had the pleasure of meeting Alison at the Sydney Women’s Expo where she shared her journey of shedding over 50 kilos, and reintegrating to ‘life on the outside’. So many people praised how fantastic she looked and how much they loved watching her on TV. Asked how she deals with the attention, her reply, ‘[it’s]…Just Humbling’.

Now Alison travels around Australia aiming to inspire women to get fit – and the key according to Alison is the power of the mind.

When I heard Alison encouraging people to ‘Jump for joy’, I automatically thought of my experience trying to get mothers to have a jump on the Springfree™ Trampoline. At the event I offered many mothers the opportunity to have a bounce, but their response was “Oh No… I couldn’t jump I would probably fall apart”. But once they make the decision to get out of their comfort zone, and give it a go, they have an absolute ball!

Alison is proof that your body can do amazing things, when you’ve got your head right.

So I propose a mission to all mothers, women and anybody who hasn’t jumped out of their comfort zone for a while – go crazy! Try something new, do something different – heck get out to the backyard and jump on the Springfree™ Trampoline if you’re one of those mothers who thinks… Geez that looks fun but I couldn’t do that!!

How do mums feel about their kids venturing abroad?

So, it’s no big secret I just returned from 7 months travelling… and the more I read the luckier I realise I was.

I’ve joked a little that I’ve been to some pretty dangerous spots, Caracas and Los Llanos in Venezula, Nairobi in Kenya… etc.

My mother is fortunately a good sport, and didn’t give me too much grief at the time, but talking recently I realised how worried she really was. And with good cause.

After hearing exhalations of ‘you went where??!!’… I had a hunt of the world’s most dangerous cities. Guess what, Caracas has arguably the highest danger rating in the world.

Then there was a recent travel story in the Sydney Morning Herald (a big paper over here in Australia) listing the top ten places you’re likely to be pick pocketed.

Shock horror – I’ve been to 8 out of the top 10. And the only reason I haven’t been to all 10 is I ran out of time to visit Madrid (which I’d paid for) and Buenos Aires which was on my original ticket, but I had to change as I couldn’t fit it in.

1. Barcelona, Spain

2. Rome, Italy

3. Prague, Czech Republic

4. Madrid, Spain

5. Paris, France

6. Florence, Italy

7. Buenos Aires, Argentina

8. Amsterdam, Netherlands.

9. Athens, Greece

10. Hanoi, Vietnam

I’m 26, and independent, but I travelled overseas first time alone at 16. Not being a mother myself, but seeing how happy my mum is to have me back in one piece, how do you feel about your kids travelling? Or having little ones, and knowing one day they will?

AUSTRALIAN MINISTER ANNOUNCES TRAMPOLINE SAFETY REVIEW: 9000 kids hospitalized per year isn’t okay…

Springfree™ Trampoline welcomes the New South Wales Minister for Fair Trade’s review into trampoline safety.

Virginia Judge has ordered a NSW Product Safety Committee review into the safety of backyard trampolines.

The review will consider the nature of the Australian Trampoline standard which is currently voluntary and making safety enclosures a requirement.

An estimated 9 – 16 thousand Australian children are presented to emergency departments annually from trampoline injuries, meaning this inquiry is critical.

At Springfree™ Trampoline we’ve been working tirelessly for 5 years to make backyards safer. Traditional spring-based trampolines cause a staggering number of injuries.

Children are injured falling into the springs and frame of traditional trampolines, or falling off or into rigid enclosure poles – we have removed these elements completely from our design – effectively removing the risk of equipment induced injuries.

Imagine if a major car manufacturer sold a product to which you could directly attribute at least 9,000 injuries per year? It would be banned no questions asked. We hope this is the first step towards creating a formal mandated trampoline standard in Australia – ensuring consumers are protected from unsafe products.

To Vaccinate Or Not To Vaccinate?

It’s an age old question many parents struggle with, and with the latest H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine, many parents are again asking – do you trust the vaccine and risk possible adverse reactions in your children or do you hold off?

We’ve all heard the horror stories of vaccines gone wrong. Rightly or wrongly many assume they’re safe, but this latest swine flu vaccine rushed through testing and now available – do you think it’s safe for your family, and would you get vaccinated?

Tanya Munro from Springfree tells “Personally I’ve always had vaccinations, and have in the past always vaccinated my children – it’s almost what’s expected of parents and non compliance of such tradition is generally shunned by the medical and educational fraternity.

I always held this opinion. That is until my son had his MMR vaccine a few years back and overnight his personality changed. Faced with a lifelong ASD diagnosis, it turns out my family is one of those horror stories you read about. Now I know some skeptics will point towards research showing no links between vaccination and Autism, but they haven’t lived our lives and seen the complete personality change and impact it’s had. Coincidence or not? I know my view.”

So, what’s yours. Do you have a horror story to share? Would you trust the H1N1 vaccine?

Obviously it’s a choice each family has to make for themselves, and I’m in no way going to influence your decision. Do your own research and make your own choice is my recommendation, and it’s one which is shared by CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton.

“If you are at high-risk for serious complications of influenza, then if many people get H1N1, your risk of getting sick is probably greater than your risk of having a rare side effect. And the possible benefit may be life-saving for some people. You have to weigh the risks of getting influenza, and the risk of possibly dying from it.”

The risk of death from H1N1, Ashton said, is roughly 1 in 1000 people. She said you should weigh that risk against getting vaccinate, which, however safe the vaccine may be, the risk is never zero.

“People need to make those difficult decisions for themselves with good education and information from reputable sources,” Ashton said. “I respect both decisions. Ultimately it’s up to the patient.”

In Australia the H1N1 Vaccine is available from 30 September nationally from GP’s and healthcare professionals.

What Happens When Your Kid Flushes A Hat In The Toilet At School

I’m the proud mother of two very active and occasionally very naughty young boys. By the ages of 9 and 7 you think they’d be over the young naughty stage and start to take just a little more responsibility for their thoughts and actions. Well, one would hope and pray. Alas one Wednesday I received a phonecall from the school – my kids attend a rather proper Catholic school where nuisance is not easily tolerated – so you can imagine my horror when the head of religious education (also the deputy principal) rings me to advise my youngest darling has been involved in an “incident”.

At this point my mind is jumping between expecting the next sentence to include mumblings of his mutilated body dangling from some piece dangerous playground equipment and emergency services are on their way, through to the other extreme of him having thrown a chair at the teacher and has been duly expelled, sitting in the principal’s office awaiting my arrival.

Fortunately it was somewhere in between, but certainly the head of RE was not impressed. What had transpired was my 7 year old petal had gotten himself in a fight in the toilets and settled the matter by flushing the other child’s school hat in the urinals (are you getting the same vivid image at this point?). Trying not to laugh, I offered my profuse apology insisting I instill a suitable punishment and offer to purchase a new hat for the other child. Needless to say number 2 son was duly punished with the removal of Xbox, DS and Wii privileges for 2 weeks and removal of pocket money. Even removal of his most prized rewards had little impact on his behaviour or demeanor. Is it getting harder to find a suitable punishment for kids or is it just me? How do you find a punishment that works without resorting to “the strap” (what we got when I was a wee girl) ??

To those of you who have primary school aged kids – no doubt you could tell a similar tale of school yard goings on. If you have a similar story to tell, or a recommendation on punishment options – please share it with us…….

Nursery Rhymes go bye-bye…..

According to research in the UK, parents are replacing the tradition Nursery Rhyme with songs like ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’…Well not specifically Brittany Spears but with Pop Songs in general.

From 2,500 parents more than a third had never sung a Nursery Rhyme to their child and more than a quarter admitted they could not remember a single nursery rhyme.

My fondest childhood memory involves my mum singing nursery rhymes to me each night to gently put me to sleep and I hope to replicate and recite when I too have off-spring of my own.

This distressing revelation prompted my rampage around the Springfree™ Trampoline Australian office to I ask the mum’s of Springfree to sing me three nursery rhymes in the hope that all is not lost and there is still hope for Mary and her little lamb.

My first port of call is Leanne, Finance and HR Manager but more importantly soon to be mummy. I had high hopes for Leanne and she didn’t disappoint. Every Rhyme I threw at her, Twinkle Little Star, Baa Baa Black sheep, Humpty Dumpty, she sang perfectly word for word. My spirits were lifted…

Then to Tanya, Assistant Marketing Manager and Mother of two primary school aged children. I tested her with the tricky ones such as Hickory Dickory Dock and Hey Diddle Diddle and I thought for sure she would slip up but no, she aced them.

Barbara was a different story. Our bubbly and always smiling Sales Supervisor looks like the person who would know all the good ole Nursery Rhymes, however much to my surprise she didn’t do as well. Although she could hum the tunes, the lyrics did not pour out as fluid as the other two but hey 2 out of 3 isn’t that bad!

Nurseryrhymes.com believe that reciting songs to your child is essential for brain development and after a quick search on other parenting sites I found all the benefits of singing nursery rhymes. They can help your child develop:

  • Rhyme
  • Rhythm
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Imagery
  • Vocabulary
  • Coordination
  • Confidence

Do you still sing Nursery Rhymes to your children? Do you think the traditional rhymes are slowing being replaced with new fancy versions?

I will never forget you Nursery Rhyme, don’t you worry about that….

Are your balls burning?

“A common and seemingly harmless kids toy could be damaging your outdoor play equipment” warns Springfree Trampoline spokesperson Tanya Munro. One of the latest kids toy crazes are clear high bounce balls. They come in a range of sizes and shapes, however their opaque nature can be a disaster waiting to happen. Left out, these fun play toys can harness and direct the sun’s powerful UV rays, acting like a magnifying glass and damaging all in their wake. “I’d hate to see the damage bill with these destructive tools in the hands of my two sons!”

“We’ve had reports of customers whose Springfree Trampoline mats have been damaged from their kids leaving such balls in the trampoline. As soon as the sun hits them and deflects the powerful beam onto the polypropylene mat, the damage is irreversible. For any parent who’s seen the movie Ant Bully, you’ll recall in horror how dangerous the sun’s focused beam can be. I’ve heard of similar stories where clear water bottles have burned holes in leather car seats when left parked in the sun, so it pays to be particularly careful coming into summer.”

A recall on one particular ball has been issued through Dept Fair Trading in NSW after damage to trampolines, carpet and soft furnishings were reported:

Go to the link

“As the mother of two young boys, I can be sure I won’t pass this information on to them – they’d be straight out on our Springfree testing the theory to see if it works! Before you know it our balls would be burning too!”

Australia has one of the harshest UV environments in the world, so just as we’re taught to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, we should be mindful of the damage it can cause to property as well.

A timely reminder for owners of any outdoor play equipment, it’s good practice to ensure any play toys are not left outside and particularly stored on top of or inside of such equipment. “If you manage to find the secret in getting the kids to clean up their toys – drop me a line and let me know, I’m still forever picking up after mine!”

As a company, Springfree Trampoline warns customers that foreign objects can cause damage, reminding them to ensure any play toys, balls and foreign objects are not stored permanently inside the Springfree™ Trampoline, but removed after play, as any such incidents will void the mat warranty.

“Good advice for the mother of little terrors like mine!”
